The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
