New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, did not confirm he would live there promptly following his victory in November.
"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will always live within me and my work," he said.
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
However his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he came from a famous family.
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his modest Astoria apartment.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
