Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a new playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but includes several key adjustments:
In short, this mode delivers on its name: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think it's a good idea, as it gives additional choices for gamers looking for different ways to have fun with the title. However, gaming history has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. In other words, many Battlefield 6 players are mad.
"People want human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your rivals," states one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," comments another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "I have no idea where we are headed with this game," while someone else details all the issues they consider to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says a forum post. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title all the time. Let them strike a balance," adds another. One reply via social media clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for other modes due to the sheer number of options in the game already. On a similar note, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the mode. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base meeting them halfway, as per forum feedback. Another labels this addition as the developers "making a mistake significantly, I had great enjoyment in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Should the development team has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments that were overly hard were adjusted very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, if their data shows this new playlist isn't performing to their standards, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
