New Year's Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Expected Across the UK

Weather experts are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," stated the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be chilly, making extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Set to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Activated

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
