LeBron James was aware his monumental streak of scoring in double figures was threatened. At the decisive instant, however, it was not his focus.
The right decision meant distributing the ball – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, his remarkable run finished.
LeBron's staggering run of over 1,200 straight regular-season outings scoring at least ten concluded this past Thursday, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader finished with eight points during the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He provided the game-winning assist, setting up Rui Hachimura to hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
“Nothing,” James said when asked on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
LeBron had the chance to tried to secure the game – and preserved the streak – with the last shot, but he chose to make the extra pass to his teammate stationed in the corner. Hachimura made the shot, and James celebrated immediately.
You have to play the game correctly. Always make the right play,” James explained. That is my M.O.. That is the way I was taught to play. That's what I've done throughout my career.”
“LeBron is fully cognizant exactly how many points he's scored during a game,” commented the team's head coach JJ Redick. He made the play as he has done throughout his career.”
LeBron checked back into the game one last time with under five and a half minutes to go, the result and his personal record both hanging in the balance. He had a mere six points from a 3-for-15 performance at that juncture.
He managed a basket at 1:46 left to tie the game then missed a mid-range jumper at 1:01 left that might have taken him to ten points.
He didn’t take another shot – but could have. Austin Reaves gave James the ball as time wound down, however, James chose to dish it off instead of shooting.
“The basketball gods, if you do it the proper way, they will bless you,” Redick stated.
James's streak commenced on Jan. 6, 2007. It was, by far the longest double-digit streak in professional basketball: MJ previously held a streak of 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run at 575.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” noted teammate Jake LaRavia.
He simply plays hoops. He could have shot but given his nature as a player and just who he is as a person, he chose the unselfish play, found Rui and secured the victory.”
Scoring in double figures had typically been an afterthought early in the fourth quarter began. Over the course of the record, he had attained double figures by the start of the fourth on the vast majority of occasions prior to Thursday.
However, two of those unusual single-digit games through three quarters had happened just days before: He recorded nine points going into the fourth against Dallas on 28 November, then had six points before the fourth quarter against Phoenix on Monday night.
James managed to keep the streak alive against the Suns. One game later, it finished – but he still rejoiced regardless.
I only ever make the right play. That is instinctive, regardless of outcome,” James affirmed. “You make the right play, the sports deities forever giving back to me.”
