Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
