Citizens have assembled across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the morning session concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the differences between the both parties.

Key Matters in Talks

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies distribution
  • Future governance of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person are released no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence heal," she added.

Near the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the west side district, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the night comes, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, embracing, particularly my little child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area reported another two fatalities had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while seeking help to the south region, health workers reported.

The territory's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
