Figures from both sides of the political aisle and the entertainment world are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial amount.
The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
āWhat a vile and vile statement,ā remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didnāt support him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He publicly dared members in his political party to defend the comments.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, thereās a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
