NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, labeling him a āsnake and a untruthful personā and alleging of having āa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā Nonetheless, in a new statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now intends to appear with the former governor in areas where he maintains significant backing.
āI think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how important this election is,ā Adams commented.
He added, āThey have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and Iām going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.ā
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has made headlines worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would decline the mayor's support if extended.
Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for Adamsās cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the support announcement by stating, āI'm meeting Andrew this evening.ā
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicksā season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a heated candidate debate.
