The award-winning broadcaster and filmmaker, Sir Humphrey Burton, has passed away at 94 years old.

His death occurred at his home, in the company of his family.

Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton rose to become one of the industry’s most respected broadcasters, bringing the joy of classical music to the general public.

He served as the BBC’s head of music and arts in the 1960s and 1970s, receiving awards for programmes such as The Golden Ring.

He also founded the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that uncovered soloists such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
